Inside of the Bus
Interior Photos and FAQs
Our bus has about 35 feet of interior living space with 12 windows on either side, not including the entrance door and driver window. None of our windows are permanently covered or removed and they are all tinted. On the exterior, we installed custom-made window screens. On the interior, we installed 24 custom-made curtains in 4 sections of tension wire.
Elle works from home doing graphic design and video editing, so we made sure to create a comfortable space to work and not feel isolated or too in the way. The computer now doubles as our living room tv if we want to watch something while we eat or play a game.
The benches double as storage, each having an oversized drawer under the seat that stores our many board games and vinyl records.
In order to get the perfect fit, we designed and created the entire interior from scratch, including the cabinets and counters. For the purposes of keeping our overall weight as low as possible, we used light materials, but it is structurally strong and we sit up on the counters all the time.
On the left, there are two cupboards for dishes and cups. We installed a very large and deep sink, making washing dishes (or your hair) easy and accessible. Underneath the sink, we installed a Bosch water heater. The angled cabinet at the end of the counter is a slide out pantry where we keep dry goods. Beyond the counter is the dining area/seating.
On the right is the 5-burner gas stove. We do not have an oven, but we do have a dutch oven and an air fryer. The stove is the only thing in our bus that uses propane. The propane for the stove is directly underneath the counter and we turn it off after every use. A 20 lb canister of propane lasts us about 4 to 6 months. Beyond the counter is the office space.
Standing in the center of the bus, you would be standing between the refrigerator and the partition wall from the front half of the bus to the bathroom/bedroom/back half of the bus.
On the left we built a custom cat tree for our 3 cats. Below it is a top-loading litter box which can be accessed from the side door for cleaning. There is also a built-in storage cabinet for their supplies.
On the right is the small closet for coats and hanging clothes. Below that is a custom built-dresser. Ahead is the bed and below it is more storage space. Beneath the headboard, the on-board fresh water tank is stored and pumped towards the kitchen.
After the bed, there is another 2.5 feet of storage area by the back door. The back half of the under-bed storage is accessible from there as well as the area we call “the garage”. Above that are our books and comics.

Before we built the bus out, we did A LOT of planning, including several sketches of the interior of the bus and how we wanted each piece to look. Jake put all of the measurements together and created a 3D model of the bus interior on SketchUp so that we could visualize the space better. Here’s what the plan looked like before it was built:
