Living in Maine : Week 6

Living in Maine : Week 6

This week we got to explore some new places like Birch Point Beach, Warren Island, Camden Harbor, and the Rockport Music Festival.

September 13th:

Birch Point State Park

Jake packed us some sandwiches for a picnic on the beach. We spent a few hours on the shore, taking photos and looking for sea glass. The state park features a sandy, crescent-shaped “pocket beach” with scenic views of the Muscle Ridge Islands dotting Muscle Ridge Channel. The weather was perfect. The park was quiet and peaceful.

September 15th:

Warren Island, Camden Harbor

Our camp hosts took us out on their antique boat, ‘Sea Swell’. We went in a group with other seasonal camp hosts and had an amazing time on our cruise. We left from Rockport Harbor and headed to Warren Island State Park.Warren island State Park is only accessible by boat or kayak. On the way, we passed Indian Island Lighthouse and Curtis Island Lighthouse. We also spotted some beautiful antique Schooner ships.

Warren Island State Park is a 70-acre park that sits 3 miles offshore from the mainland. The island was acquired by the state of Maine for $1 in 1959. We hiked the circumference of Warren Island and took in the surrounding views.

After we hiked the island, we headed to Camden Harbor. Jake navigated for Scott and drove the boat for a while. At Camden Harbor, we visited the Blue Barren Gin distillery where we tried some excellent gin cocktails at their outdoor bar. Gin is Jake’s spirit of choice, but one of my least favorites. That being said, I had a lavender infused drink and I LOVED it.

We drank to our heart’s content and then left right before sunset, making the last part of our cruise very picturesque. We sailed back to Rockport Harbor and learned upon arriving to the harbor that there was a reggae music festival happening at the harbor park. The band that was playing featured Bob Marley’s original sax player, Glen DaCosta. We danced and enjoyed pizza from the food trucks.

September 17th:

My Birthday! We spent my birthday doing the number one thing I like to do on my birthday.. NOTHING. I cleaned up the bus, took some photos, and Jake tended the succulent garden. It was a good day.

September 18th:

Our Team Time Tuesday was done on Wednesday because Catherine had to go out of town on Tuesday. My birthday is on the same day as another camp host, Odin. We celebrated on Wednesday with dishes we prepared that reflect our heritage. I made a Cuban mojo marinated roast pork shoulder and Odin made a Swedish meat pie. They were so good, I didn’t get a picture of them because they were devoured. Here’s a pic of the bone from my pork shoulder.
